Singing club

The school singing club meets on a Tuesday after school 3.35 - 4.10pm in the hall.
The club is run by Miss Roper and currently there are 40 children (Years 4-6) singing in the school choir.
We perform short concerts or specially prepared pieces for occasions and the children have a chance to sing a wide range of music including popular songs, sacred songs, songs from the 'shows' and some songs from other cultures.
In addition the singing club supports the spiritual life of the school and has been invited to sing at Masses, at our special Christmas shopping night and at the Bishop's Stortford Primary School's Carol Service at St. Michael's

This term we prepared to participate in a very special ‘Young Voices’ concert at the 02 Arena in London.
Our children joined forces with over 2000 singers from other schools to share our enjoyment of singing together. We were very excited about this because it is a ‘first’ for St. Joseph’s!

We also took part in St. Michael’s Church Carol Service.
Our choir performed a carol by John Rutter called ‘The Colours of Christmas.’ Also we provided a reader and two soloists for the first verse of ‘Once in Royal.’
The service provided a wonderful opportunity to think about the true meaning of Christmas and to join with other local primary schools to celebrate the festive season together.

Recorder Lessons

We are pleased to run our 4 recorder clubs. The clubs are all run voluntarily.

Beginner Group is with Mrs Da Costa after school on a Tuesday 3.35pm-4.00pm in the ICT suite
Intermediate Group is with Miss Roper at lunchtime on a Friday 12.15pm-12.35pm in the ICT suite
The Top Group takes place with Miss Roper at lunchtime on a Thursday 12.50pm-1.10pm in the Hall
The Treble Group is with Miss Roper on a Friday 8.50am-9.10am in the Resource Room

The children progress steadily to the point at which some can opt to learn the treble recorder as well as the descant. This broadens the range of music we can play to include ensemble pieces as well.

Drum Truck

Another exciting first for St. Joseph’s! Mr Chris Senior from Drum Truck visited and gave a demonstration during assembly.
Following this we are delighted to announce that 10 children, ranging from Year 2 to Year 6, have signed up for drum lessons.

General Music Lessons

The Early Years Foundation Stage & Key Stage 1

The class teachers, support staff and Miss Roper are busy helping the children in Foundation Stage and in Key Stage 1 to prepare for their Christmas Shows.

Lower Key Stage 2

Children in Maple, Oak and Pine have been learning to play tuned percussion and a few notes on the recorder as each class has formed a mini-class orchestra over the last 3 weeks.

Upper Key Stage 2

Both Willow and Sycamore classes have had Masses this year and prepared a lovely liturgy accompanied by singing. Miss Roper has been delighted to be able to play keyboard at both Masses.

As well as IPC (International Primary Curriculum) work this term the children have been researching different styles of music including: Classical, Jazz, Country, R’n’B and Boogie Woogie.
They will be presenting their research using Powerpoint presentations later this term.
