Year 1
In Science this term, Year One has been learning all about plants!
Plants are living things just like you and me. They drink, eat, move and grow just like us. This is how we know they are living things. This term we have learnt about the different parts of a plant, including the seed, root, shoot, stem, leaves, bud and their functions and finding out what a plant needs to grow and identifying different plants in our school grounds. The children also enjoyed exploring our school grounds and finding out about garden plants, wildflowers, evergreen trees and deciduous trees.
Year One have been investigating the question... ‘What conditions does a plant need to grow?’ We have learnt that plants need three things to grow: water, sunlight and carbon dioxide. We kept this in mind when we planted our beans and decided they should be watered every day and be kept on the windowsill. The children have been closely monitoring their plants in groups and recording their observations.
You can go on your own plant hunt around where you live, take some photos and see what you can find out about plants by researching.
Year 2
During our Geography topic ‘What is it like to live by the coast?’, we explored what a coast actually is and researched some of its features. We have had so much fun researching different coasts around the UK using Google maps and atlases - our favourite coasts were the Jurassic Coast and the Giant’s Causeway! At the end of our topic, we collected data about how people used their local coast. We used our knowledge of tally charts to record this.
We have also started our new History topic, ‘What is a monarch?’. In the first lesson, we explored who King Charles III is and what his main duties are as King. Over the course of this unit, we will also be researching previous monarchs such as William the Conqueror as well as exploring how castles have changed over time!
